Each year, pipelines transport more than 12.9 billion barrels (542 billion gallons) of petroleum products across state lines. Crude oil accounts for about 59 percent of petroleum products transported by pipeline (7.6 billion barrels), with refined petroleum products accounting for the remaining 5.3 billion barrels. Crude oil is the starting point for the production of petroleum products. Crude oil pipelines convey crude oil to refineries and chemical plants from onshore and offshore production wells, as well as from coastal shipping terminals.
Hundreds of goods are made from these base materials, including those used in and around the house. Pipelines also convey refined products to regional and local distribution facilities, which is the second half of the transit journey. The supplies are loaded onto tanker trucks at distribution hubs and transported to airports, service locations, and your home.
